What is Breakfast for Learning?
Breakfast for Learning is a leading non-profit organization dedicated to improving children’s nutrition in schools across Canada. Founded in 1992, the foundation supports nutrition programs from British Columbia all the way to Newfoundland and Labrador. Proper nutrition can be one of the problems children face in schools, especially if they can’t start the day with a healthy breakfast.
Why is a Healthy Breakfast Important for Children?
Research have shown that a healthy breakfast helps children perform better in schools. In the same way, a healthy breakfast can be the most important meal of the day. Yet, too many children still go without one. This can be due to a variety of reasons, including a lack of nutrition programs and healthy food options at school.
Why Is Healthy Nutrition in Schools a Problem?
Healthy nutrition for children can be a complex subject. Parents and school staff can have a huge impact on how children get nutritious food throughout their school day. But before we can do that, we need to dig into the reasons why so many BC children aren’t receiving healthy food at school.
Here are some reasons:
- A lack of healthy snacks in school vending machines
- Teachers could be offering snacks or food with little nutritional value as rewards for good behavior
- Fundraising efforts at school may involve selling unhealthy treats
- Schools may not have a nutrition committee to help bring in healthy food programs for school children
So, What Does Breakfast for Learning Do?
As an organization, Breakfast for Learning provides grants for schools so they can obtain the equipment, food, and staff needed to provide their students with healthy breakfasts. They also help communities and schools learn about proper nutrition, and how they can achieve that. Finally, Breakfast for Learning supports child nutrition research as well as national meal programs across Canada.
How has Canadian Mattress Recycling helped?
Back in 2015, our company made a $400 donation to the Breakfast for Learning program. Our donation helped ensure that Canadian children get their school days off to a great start. Our donation supports their nutrition awareness programs across BC schools, as well as research and funding for schools to implement healthy food programs. Note that for the 2017 year onwards, the Breakfast for Learning program has been continued by President’s Choice Children’s Charity.
